Memphis food drive uses social media to encourage donations

A food drive that will be primarily supported on social media in Memphis hopes to replenish stock at the Mid-South Food Bank for the spring

The Mid-South Food Bank will host its second annual Good Friday Food Drive online on Friday, March 29.

This year’s food drive will rely on social media to spread the word and encourage support by using the hashtag #memfood. With social media, the Food Bank, along with Good Friday Food Drive’s official sponsors Easy Way Produce and First State Bank, will initiate a call-to-action to followers via Twitter.

“Mid-South Food Bank encourages everyone to get involved,” said Mid-South Food Bank Communications Director Marcia Wells. “Community food drives are an important source of food and funds to purchase food.”

Last year, the food bank received over $3,000 in donations online – the equivalent of 9,000 meals.

On Friday participants can donate at midsouthfoodbank.org. Also, donations can be made in person at the following locations:

Reckless driving complaint leads to rape arrest

The Tipton County Sheriff's Office arrested a man who was later charged with statutory rape, after investigating a reckless driving complaint.

Deputies responded to the area of Webb Lane in Drummonds regarding a vehicle engaged in dangerous and senseless driving last week. The vehicle matching the description was parked on a field of the road.

Deputies noticed a lot movement from the occupants inside the vehicle, and noticed one male outside of the car.

A 15-year-old girl was found in the car with the other male. The teenager was later released to her parents.

Autuan Dowell, 23, is one of the adult men. He was detained and charged with statutory rape. Dowell remains on a $10,000 bond awaiting his appearance in Tipton County General Sessions Court on March 28.

Tipton Co. Sheriff's Dept. looking for home invasion suspects

Tipton County Sheriff’s Office Detectives have identified the two suspects in a home invasion robbery.  At about 3:50 PM on 11 March 2013 deputies were summoned to the 10 block of Robin Hood Circle in Millington (Tipton County) regarding two armed males that entered the residence and demanded money from two victims, Lucus Miracle and Jeremy Wyatt. The robbers held the victims at gunpoint until the residence was searched and the duo fled with approximately $611.00 in cash and a firearm.  The victims were not injuried in the robbery.

Dirt Pilgrims Kick Off March 21 Arts in the Alley in Henderson's Downtown Park

The Henderson Arts Commission will kick off its fourth season of Arts in the Alley on Thursday, March 21, at 6 p.m. The 2013 events will have a new home — Henderson's Downtown Park on Main Street, utilizing the park and the the alleys on two sides of it.

For the third year, Dirt Pilgrims will perform at the season opener. Band members Bob Raines, James Mayo, David Mayo, John Koons and Victor Garcia and their folk tunes are a crowd favorite.

At each Arts in the Alley, vendors sell work that includes items such as sewn crafts, paintings, wreaths, wood cuttings, altered art crafts, handmade soaps and photography. The requirement for a having a booth is selling something handmade. Booth spaces are $15 for non-members and $10 for Henderson Arts Commission members. (Membership is $25 annually and may be paid at the event.)
