Reception set to honor young artists

Young artists from Barbara McBride's art classes are now exhibiting drawings, watercolors and acrylic paintings at Dyersburg State Community College, Jimmy Naifeh Center, 973 Highway 51, N., Covington.

The artists include Mary Tanner Simmons, Bailey Cooper, Harris Howard, Savannah Simpson, Star Bradshaw, Haley Watkins, Maddie Smith, Jade Mason, Cejae Hall, Alex Mason, Coltin Clay, Gunner Wallace, Kayla Watson, Victoria Billings, Amber Connell, Ashton Pickard and Sydney Pilkington.

A reception for the artists will be held at the College this coming Thursday evening, March 31, from 5:30 to 7:00. 

Please join them at the reception and visit with these wonderful young people and view their delightful art work.

Munford High wins Spanish competition

Munford High wins Spanish competition

Spanish language students from Munford High School took home the Grand Premio award for the fourth year in a row at the 27th Spanish Feria hosted by Dyersburg State Community College.

Held on Wednesday March 9, the Feria has become one of the capstone events for area high school students taking Spanish language and culture courses. 

Students compete in areas as diverse as crafts, cooking, dictation, video production and poetry. 

This year approximately 244 students from Bradford, Brighton, Munford, Covington, and Fulton High Schools took part in the Feria.

DSCC presents spring play

The DSCC Theatre Department announces the cast for its upcoming spring production of The Boys Next Door by Tom Griffin. 

The play is slated to be presented March 31 – April 2 at 7:30 p.m.in the First Citizens National Bank Auditorium in the Campus Activities Building on the Dyersburg campus.

An Off-Broadway success, The Boys Next Door is a very funny yet very touching play that focuses on the lives of four mentally challenged men who live in a communal residence under the watchful eye of their sincere, but increasingly unsatisfied, social worker.

Opera Memphis Offers Free Tickets for Locks Donation

Opera Memphis is offering two tickets to “The Barber of Seville,” in exchange for a Locks of Love donation.

You can have your hair cut at any salon.  Drop off donations at the Clark Opera Memphis Center at 6745 Wolf River Parkway on Friday, April 1 between 4:30-6:30pm.  You must notify Opera Memphis at locksoflove@operamemphis.org before dropping off a donation.

Donated hair must be at least 10 inches, clean, dry and bundled in a ponytail or braid. Bleached hair cannot be used. Hair that has been dyed or permed can.  Locks of Love uses donated hair to make wigs for children suffering hair loss due to illness.

Color TV: Careers in the Media

Rhodes College hosted a unique Black History Month program on campus Tuesday night in the Orgill Room of the Clough Building.

About 30 students showed up for "Color TV: Careers in Media," a panel discussion about diversity in media and the accomplishments of African Americans in the field. Panelists inlcuded: Action News 5 morning co-anchor Kym Clark, 95.7 Hallelujah FM radio personality/producer Michael Adrian Davis and the Executive Director of the Tri-State Defender Dr. Karanja Ajanaku.

Students, most of whom are interested in journalism or mass media careers, were also invited to ask questions of the panelists about their personal experiences in their chosen fields, as well as the future of the business.

Music legend Joyce Cobb to perform at Dyersburg State

On Friday, February 25 at 7 p.m., Memphis’ first lady of jazz, Joyce Cobb will perform live in the First Citizens National Bank Auditorium in the Campus Activities Building on the Dyersburg campus of Dyersburg State Community College.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert is the highlight of DSCC’s 2011 Black History Month observances. 

It is sponsored in part by the DSCC Office of Student Life and the DSCC Office of Multicultural Affairs.

Black History Month Celebrates Artists’ Exhibit, “Eyes on The Prize”

The National Civil Rights Museum and the Memphis College of Art comes together to display fine art through the expression of civil rights. The NCR Museums donated collection will be on display in the Hyde Galley of the Memphis College of Art during gallery hours.
