Free tax help offered to Tipton County residents

For the fifth year, VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites on the Dyersburg campus and at the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center (DSCC JNC) at Tipton County (Covington) are providing free tax filing services for those area taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of less than $49,000. 

DSCC offers this service as a member of the Family Self-Sufficiency Alliance of West Tennessee. 

The Dyersburg VITA center, located in the Learning Resource Center, opened on Monday, January 24 and provides tax services Mondays and Thursdays from 5:00 - 7:30 p.m. through April 14.

The VITA site at the DSCC JNC opened Monday, Jan. 24 and provides assistance Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 - 7 p.m. through April 13.

In 2010, the DSCC VITA sites enabled 488 area residents to receive a combined total of $684,542 in tax refunds. 

DSCC joined the Family Self-Sufficiency Alliance of West Tennessee five years ago.

Munford Parks and Recreation will be offering computer classes in January.

The following classes will be offered on the following dates:

 

Facebook Class:  Jan 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26, 31 at 12:30 p.m.

Internet/Basic Computer Class:  Jan 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26, 31 at 2:30 p.m.

Microsoft Word Class:  Jan 4, 6, 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, 27 at 12:30 p.m.

Microsoft Word (Evening) Class:  Jan 4, 6, (Saturday, January 15TH from 9 a.m. to noon) 18, 20, 25, 27 at 5:30 p.m.

 

The cost for each course is $35.00. 

Classes will be held at 63 College Street.

A manufacturer of water-based coatings says it will bring up to 25 jobs to Covington when it opens an $8 million facility in the town.

Local and county lawmakers say Sustainable Fiber Solutions will operate in a 147,000 square foot building that used to house Abitibi-Bowater, a paper supplier to the magazine industry.

In fact, in an effort to stretch the holiday shopping season a little further, some national chains are ditching Black Friday altogether. The Gap, Walmart and Sears are opening up stores across the country on Thanksgiving night.

USDA office hours changing

The business hours for the USDA Rural Development office in Covington are changing starting Monday.

Here's some information from a press release:

Beginning today, single-family housing staff will be available to take applications on Fridays by appointment. As always, customers seeking other programs offered through RD can contact the Jackson office during regular business hours Monday through Friday at the numbers listed below.
