Small business network held in Washington, D.C.

Dyersburg State Community College staff members, Maleia Evans and Dr. James Frakes, recently represented the TN Small Business Development Centers Network in Washington, DC for the 2012 ASBDC Annual Spring Conference and Legislative Affairs Sessions, March 19-23, 2012.

During the trip, they met with each U.S. Senator and Congressman from TN to discuss the strong economic impact the TSBDC network has in each Congressional District and to offer the Legislators support, in their respective Districts, as the outreach agency for small business development.

During the 2011 program year, the TSBDC Network, through free training, education, and counseling, assisted small business owners in the creation of 886 new jobs and the retention of 1,025 existing jobs throughout the State of Tennessee.

Additionally, the TSBDCs were vital in providing an economic impact, through capital infusion, of more than $53.3 million during the 2011 program year.

Five resume boosters

A photographer candidate recently submitted his resume to my chief photographer.

The rag was riddled with typos, grammatical errors and misspellings. It looked like the guy had never heard of the "spell check" feature on his laptop.

Shoot! Score! In the waste basket!

Those are the obvious resume mistakes. Author and career coach Ford R. Myers suggested these five ways to tidy your resume, including some that aren't so obvious:

* BE BRIEF. Myers said there are basically five parts of a resume:  Header/Contact Information, Career Summary, Professional Experience, Education & Affiliations and Professional Development. Out of those, Myers said Career Summary should be the tightest.

"The summary is a brief statement of who you are, where you're 'coming from' and what skills and expertise you have to contribute to an organization," said Myers.

Memphis-based ServiceMaster brands help military veterans raise money to start businesses

Information provided by GLOBE NEWSWIRE

Four ServiceMaster brands have joined forces with a new online fundraising program called Boost A Hero in an effort to help military veterans purchase franchise businesses. Boost A Hero, available at www.sprigster.com, provides a platform where vets utilize "crowdfunding" to raise the capital they need to purchase franchises like ServiceMaster Clean, Merry Maids, Furniture Medic and AmeriSpec -- which are all ServiceMaster brands.

The four ServiceMaster brands are charter members of the Boost A Hero program, which was recently initiated by Sprigster in partnership with the International Franchise Association (IFA).

"The unemployment rate for military veterans is 50 percent higher than the national average, despite the fact that vets make outstanding team members and business owners," said Beth Solomon, IFA Vice President of Strategic Initiatives & Industry Relations.
