Covington church in need of food to stock food pantry shelves | Community Spirit
Title (Max 100 Characters)
For the first time since First United Methodist Church Covington began the Bread of Life food ministry 2-1/2 years ago, the need could not be met from the Mid-South Food Bank.
The church placed an order for food at the Mid-South Food Bank this week, but could not get any of the food items on their list.
There is a combination of issues that may have caused this:
• Food stamp transition this month (the date persons receive their stamps has been changed and some folks have a gap in that transition) – all pantries are ordering more to offset this.
• Shelby county did not receive commodity foods from the state this month – not sure why, but that is creating huge demand on Shelby county pantries and their orders increased.
This order for food was for the food pantry at FUMC on October 20.
There are some on-hand items at the Covington pantry left from the 1st Saturday distribution, but the church is far shy of what they normally have on-hand.
If you can help, you're asked to bring cereal, canned fruits, canned vegetables, and other non-perishable food items to the church before next Saturday, October 20.
For more information, call Covington 1st Methodist at 901-476-9694.
