Bredesen wants disaster relief for Tipton, 27 other counties

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Gov. Phil Bredesen is requesting additional federal disaster assistance for farmers in 28 Tennessee counties as a result of drought and excessive heat during the growing season.

The counties are Bedford, Bradley, Carter, Claiborne, Cocke, Dyer, Fayette, Hamilton, Henry, Hickman, Jefferson, Lauderdale, Lewis, Marion, Marshall, Moore, Perry, Polk, Rhea, Rutherford, Sequatchie, Sevier, Sullivan, Tipton, Unicoi, Union, Washington and Williamson.

Seattle first to create Opt-Out Registry for phone books

Seattle became the first city in the nation to create a registry that allows its residents and business to stop delivery of unwanted yellow pages phone books.

The new law passed by in an 8-1 vote by Seattle City Council on Monday creates an Opt-Out Registry that residents and businesses can access on the web, by phone or by mail and requires yellow pages publishers to pay the costs of operating the registry.

The legislation also sets out penalties for yellow pages publishers who continue to deliver books when requested not to. And it requires yellow pages publishers to begin paying for recycling of unwanted and outdated yellow pages directories beginning next year.

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE (July 8, 2010) – All they wanted was a swimming pool.  What the Leyden family of Brighton, TN got was the jawbone of a gomphothere. 
Wednesday, June 1, 2010, a pool contractor’s backhoe uncovered what looked to be a dinosaur bone in the Leyden’s backyard.  Conservator Roy Young from the Memphis Pink Palace Museum was called in and tentatively identified it as the jawbone and tooth of a gomphothere.  These extinct, elephant-like animals are related to mastodons, but they lived far earlier.  It could be anywhere from 10,000 to 30,000 years old.  Home and jawbone owners Jim and Deanne Leyden have graciously allowed the Pink Palace Museum to study the jawbone as well as make a cast of it.  Director of Museums Steve Pike says this find is a first for the Mid-South, “We are extremely grate
