January is National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

January is National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

As part of National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, Planned Parenthood Greater memphis Region is urging women in the Mid-South to put preventive checkups, including cervical cancer screenings, at the top of their lists.

Every year, approximately 13,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with cervical cancer and about 4,000 American women die of the disease.

Now is a perfect time to see if you're due for a checkup, said Leah Smith, WHNP, Planned Parenthood Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. "Regular screenings and preventive care, including the HPV vaccine, are the keys to combating cervical cancer."

Planned Parenthood's health center at 2430 Poplar Avenue in Midtown Memphis offers routine cervical cancer screenings, HPV virus screenings, and the HPV vaccine, which protects against the types of the HPV virus that most often cause cancer.

Tennessee Energy Star Appliance Rebates Still Available

Winter is upon us and more Tennesseans are flipping the switch on their heaters and discovering it is time to upgrade their systems.  The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development’s Energy Division reminds Tennesseans that there is still more than $1 million remaining for energy efficient appliance rebates for consumers who have upgraded to a qualifying Energy Star® appliance since April 22, 2010.

Since October 30, ECD’s Energy Division reports that 17,491 rebates, totaling $4,131,760, have been paid to Tennesseans through the program. Tennessee consumers can still purchase and install eligible Energy Star Appliances to replace less efficient models and receive a rebate debit card on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are depleted.  Applications must be postmarked by January 14, 2012.  Tennesseans can track funds still remaining at http://teearp.efi.org.

Lifeblood giving movie passes to platelet donors

Lifeblood is giving each of its platelet donors a movie pass for donating platelets now through Monday, November 28. The movie pass can be used for any movie at any Malco theater.

The purpose of this promotion is to increase Lifeblood’s platelet supply, which is currently decreasing while the need for platelets is increasing. Patients with weakened immune systems like those with cancer who are undergoing chemotherapy or those having an organ transplant need platelets to survive.

For a complete listing of donor centers and the hours of operation, visit www.lifeblood.org or call 1-888-LIFEBLOOD.
