DSCC begins New First Year Experience program

What begins well ends well. During a time of rising college costs and higher expectations of college graduates, the Dyersburg State Community College faculty and staff are taking this old saying to heart through the new Focus program.

Over the past six months, DSCC Associate Professor of English Andrea Franckowiak, Counselor Karen Rutledge, and the DSCC Complete College Academy Team made up of President Karen Bowyer, Vice President Mary Ann Sellars, Assistant Vice President Kay Patterson, Assistant Vice President J. Dan Gullett, Associate Professor of English Linda Weeks, and Mathematics Instructor Devalyn Reynolds, have been researching what it takes to get students entering DSCC off to the best start possible. This past January and again in April, the entire DSCC faculty and staff participated in a review and brainstorming session to review the proposed new student orientation process called FOCUS: The DSCC First Year Experience Program.

Worley Helps Brothers Battle Autism/Seizures

Worley Helps Brothers Battle Autism/Seizures

Two brothers have received help from the Darryl Worley Foundation in their battle against autism and seizures. Seven-year-old Wyatt Garrett and five-year-old Wayden Garrett recently met the singer/songwriter to thank him in person for the gift that helped them receive treatments at the Tennessee Hyperbaric Center in Jackson.

After meeting the family, Worley said, “I was blown away by the fact that these parents wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. They just kept pushing until they found something that would help their boys. Their faith and determination are great examples for all of us.”

According to the boys’ mom, Kathy Garrett, Wyatt’s seizures began when he was almost two months old. Wayden has battled seizures, also, and was diagnosed as having autism at age three. That is when he went from talking in sentences to being nonverbal.

Alex Haley museum to host Easter egg hunt at Ripley Water Park

The Alex Haley Museum & Interpretive Center in Henning, TN, is teaming with NFL’s Ramon and Renardo Foster (Henning natives) to host a community Easter Egg Hunt.

The activity is scheduled for Easter Sunday, April 8th, 2-4 p.m., at the Ripley Water Park, 200 Mary Roberts Dr., Ripley, TN.

The Foster brothers, both former Ripley High School football stars, will be in attendance at the event as their way of showing support to the Lauderdale County community.

“This is me and Renardo’s way of giving back to the community,” Ramon Foster said last week. “We hope this will help some families who may not be able to give their kids that much on Easter.”
