Youth Town to celebrate 50th anniversary this weekend

Youth Town to celebrate 50th anniversary this weekend

Youth Town will celebrate 50 years of serving young people with a birthday party on Sunday, March 4 at 2 p.m. at the Jackson Country Club.

The public is invited, and admission is free. Attendees can bring a gift for a Youth Town resident by selecting one from registries at Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Former residents, board members, advisory board members, staff and friends will attend the celebration, supporting Youth Town’s mission of helping young men battle addictions. Youth Town Executive Director Nick Pappas reflected on the celebration, saying, “This is a great opportunity to recognize countless men and women who have been giving for five decades; their generosity has provided the resources needed to minister the gospel of love and hope to thousands of kids and families.”

Tipton County schools' hosts blood drive

Tipton County's Elementary Gifted students are sponsoring a competitive blood donor drive on Saturday, March 3, 2012.

It will take place at Munford Elementary from 9- 2.

This is a community service project for our classes who have studied the human body this school year.

Recently, we learned that a typical car accident with injuries can take on average 100 pints of blood to stabilize victims.

The goal is to have 100 pints of blood donated during our drive.

The student who gets the most donors will win a gift card and the school challenge class with the most donors will receive a pizza party.

Dyersburg State to hold Spanish competition

Dyersburg State to hold Spanish competition

For the 28th consecutive year, the Dyersburg State Community College will host the Spanish Feria.

The Feria, being held on March 6, has become one of the capstone events for area high school students taking Spanish language and culture courses.

Students compete in areas as diverse as crafts, cooking, dictation and poetry. In recent years, the Spanish video production has become a highlight of the competition.

This year approximately 297 students are expected to take part in the Feria.

High schools who have registered to compete are: Munford, Covington, Bradford, Brighton and Crocket County. Last year’s overall winner was Munford High School.

It requires over 75 volunteers to host the event.

Note: While this event is not open to the public, the media is welcome to attend.

Local artist to display work at Drummonds Elementary

Artist Sherri Warner Hunter will be at Drummonds Elementary on Thursday January 19th at 9 AM.

Her art project is a result of a year and a half long journey to bring more Art awareness to the rural community of Drummonds and surrounding areas.

Drummonds Elementary School’s Art Teacher, Alisha Wall, and Principal Patricia Mills commissioned artist Sherri Warner Hunter, through funds acquired from the Arts Build Communities (ABC) grant of Arts Memphis, a Tipton County Ed Foundation grant and a student coin collection drive.

Hunter worked with and for the students at Drummonds Elementary School in Tipton County, Tennessee to create a large outdoor sculpture to be displayed on the school grounds.
