Molly Ramone to Perform at May 16 Arts in the Alley

Area residents will celebrate the end of the school year at the Henderson Arts Commission's Arts in the Alley on Thursday, May 16. Beginning at 6 p.m., the May AitA will be in Henderson's Downtown Park on Main Street, utilizing the alleys beside it.

Molly Ramone, popular Nashville Celtic rock band with singer/songwriter Mark Harriman and Joe Khoury, will return to Henderson for the May event. Originally from Leiceister, England, Harriman came to America in 1995 when he signed to Gravelsauce Records. Since then he has established himself as an integral part of the Nashville music scene. Khoury plays lead guitar and mandolin and sings backing vocals. He is a prominent session player and music producer in Nashville.

This year's Arts in the Alley events will feature an after-party, beginning around 8 p.m. to offer an open-mic setting for bands to perform, individuals to read poetry, etc. In May, rock band Beyond Blame will perform then.

Arts in the Alley coming up on April 18

 After a blast of wintry weather led to the cancellation of the March Arts in the Alley, the Henderson Arts Commission will kick off its fourth season of Arts in the Alley on Thursday, April 18, at 6 p.m. The 2013 events will have a new home — Henderson's Downtown Park on Main Street, utilizing the park and the the alleys by it.

The April event will spotlight Chester County High School students under the direction of Keith Brown and Ricky Mitchell. The CCHS Jazz Band will perform, and students will perform excerpts from Seussical. The CCHS football coaches will serve as celebrity grillers.

This year's Arts in the Alley events will feature an after-party, beginning around 8 p.m. to offer an open-mic setting for bands to perform, individuals to read poetry, etc. This month Pep Rally Losers, a blues duo from Bowling Green, Ky., will perform at the AitA after party.

The Shelby County Health Department (SCHD), in collaboration with other local organizations, will encourage youth to take a stand against big tobacco companies and educate their peers about the importance of not smoking on Kick Butts Day, Wednesday, March 20.

Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism which empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against big tobacco companies. Health officials want to raise awareness of the tobacco problem, encourage youth to stay tobacco-free and urge strong action to protect kids from tobacco.

Representatives from the health department will be at the following locations on Wednesday, March 20, to distribute information and tips on smoking cessation:

Special Ranger Led St. Patrick's Day Programs at Shiloh

On Saturday, March 16, Shiloh National Military Park will be presenting two special programs in honor of Saint Patrick's Day about the contribution of Irish immigrants and Irish-Americans during the Civil War. The first program will take place from 10:00 am – 11:00 am at the Tennessee River Museum in Savannah and the second program will be from 2:00 - 3:00 pm in the park's Visitor Center. Both will focus on Irish soldiers, Union and Confederate, in the Battle of Shiloh.

From 1820 - 1860, an estimated 1,956,557 Irish immigrants arrived in the United States, most of them coming during the Great Famine of 1845 - 1852, caused by the failure of the potato crop. It is estimated that 170,000 native Irish and 400,000 Irish-Americans joined the Union Army during the war. More than 40,000 Irish fought for the Southern cause.

The event will take place in the Council Chambers at Bartlett City Hall at 5400 Stage Road on Monday January 28th from noon til 1:00 p.m.
