Brighton Middle School raises money for 3-year-old to go to Disneyworld

Students at Brighton Middle School raised almost $7,500 in one week last week.

The was part of their annual money wars for Make-A-Wish.

The money was donated during a special ceremony this past Friday morning.

Friday was designated their "big reveal" day.  Prior to Friday, Nation Junior Honor Society students and advisors spent several days after school getting the halls and school turned into a magical wonderland.

This year, students granted three year old Maliyah Irby's wish.

Irby left Saturday morning for Disneyworld.

Dyersburg State to host legislative coffee

The public is invited to attend a community-wide Legislative Coffee being held at the Dyersburg State Community College Gibson County Center, Room 115 in Trenton on Friday, February 22, 2013 from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m.

Honorary guest speakers will include Tennessee State Senator John Stevens and State Representative Curtis Halford.

They will be on-hand to answer any questions or concerns from the West Tennessee community.

Among those attending President Barack Obama’s 2nd Inauguration on January14, 2013 were Christian Brothers University seniors Tavares Mondrell Floyd (History & Political Science, (’13) and Mary Catherine Hogan (Special Education, (’13). Their actual arrival in Washington D.C. culminated weeks of planning.

West TN DA presents drug danger video to kids
West Tennesseee District Attorney Mike Dunavant presented the "Deceptive Danger" educational program to the students at East Junior High School in Fayette County on Tuesday.  "It is important to warn our young people of the dangers of prescription and synthetic drug abuse. The students were great!" the DA said.  "Deceptive Danger" is a statewide campaign to fight the rising rates of prescription medication and synthetic drug abuse among Tennessee’s youth.

The campaign is called Deceptive Danger, because Tennessee’s youth is deceived into thinking that any substance prescribed by a doctor or purchased in a convenience store is safe.

Dockery to transition to Union University chancellor in July 2014

David S. Dockery will transition from president of Union University to the role of university chancellor no later than July 2014, and Union trustees will immediately begin the process of searching for his successor as president.

“I am hopeful and prayerful for a good, smooth, joyful and positive transition,” Dockery said. “God has blessed the work of our hands and manifested his favor to this university time and time again during these past 17 years. I am confident that we will continue to see God’s grace made known to Union in the future.”

UT Martin Ripley campus to offer new degree programs

UT Martin Ripley Center has new bachelor degree programs to offer our community as well as new certification programs including the following:

  • Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Program
  • Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Management
  • Bachelor of Science in Agriculture- Business Concentration
  • Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (choose your own concentration)

In addition to our remaining degrees:

  • RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Bachelor of Science in Education (K-6) with SPED options as well
  • Bachelor of Science in Social Work
