African-American artist’s work on display

African-American artist’s work on display

In the early 1940s, from the small apartment on the roof of a five-story apartment building in Mexico, African-American artist Harold Winslow created more than 1,300 pieces of art.

A traveling exhibit of 50 of the paintings by Winslow entitled “Una Vision de la Mexicanidad,” will be on display in the Learning Resource Center on the Dyersburg campus of Dyersburg State Community College from October 15 through October 23.

An opening reception will be held on October 18 at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend and admission is free.

“Una Visión de la Mexicanidad”—“Mexicanidad” refers to the Mexican national identity and culture—offers a record of one artist’s experience in two cultures. Winslow, who was born in 1918 in Dayton, Ohio, moved to Mexico in 1940 in the hopes of escaping racism. He remained there until his death in 2001, at the age of 83.

It's back...the Haunted Trail returns

Those who want to see frightful Halloween sights will not be disappointed.

For the third year in a row, the Richard E. Donner Arboretum and Nature Trail located behind the E. H. Lannom, Jr. Gymnasium on the Dyersburg campus of Dyersburg State Community College will be transformed into a Haunted Trail.

The terrifying trek will feature new scenes, all put together as a part of Halloween fun. The Haunted Trail is presented as a fund-raiser that benefits the DSCC Athletic program and Dyersburg Civitan Club projects. “The DSCC team does a great job and we know this year’s trail will be another big success. This is Win/Win for DSCC, the Civitan Club and the community,” said Russ Maher, Civitan Area 9 Director.

The Haunted Trail will be open from 7 – 10 P.M. on October 26, 27, 30 and 31. The cost for admission is $8 for adults, $5 for children age 12 and under.

Little ones learn about the law

For the second year in a row, kindergarten students from Bradford Elementary School will get to meet law enforcement officials and emergency personnel in a special event hosted by the Gibson County Center of Dyersburg State Community College.

They will also be able take a look at fire trucks, an Air Evac helicopter, an ambulance and police cars along with the equipment used in each.

“DSCC has put this event together with the assistance of our EMT Paramedic Instructor Ben Hearn and Kelly Tivey, our TECTA (TN Early Childhood Training Alliance) coordinator. We are going to provide these little ones with the opportunity to explore careers in healthcare and technology related fields,” said DSCC GCC Director Julie Griggs.

The event will take place at the DSCC GCC in Trenton on Friday, September 28 from noon to 1:45 p.m.

For more information, please contact Griggs at 731/855-1416 or griggs@dscc.edu.

Dyersburg State to host public forums on upcoming elections

To better prepare you for the upcoming election, the Dyersburg State Community College Student Government Association (SGA) and the DSCC chapter of academic honor society Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) are hosting a series of political forums on the Dyersburg campus and the centers.

“We have invited candidates for the State Senate and House offices from across West Tennessee to attend. Our students need to be involved in the political process, and hosting these events will help them, and our community members, be aware and informed,” said Dr. Dave Strong, PTK faculty advisor.

The forums, being held the first two weeks in October, will be moderated by faculty members. Each forum will begin with short (10 minute maximum) statements from the candidates. After the opening statements, student panelists will pose questions to the candidates. There will be an opportunity for each of the candidates to provide additional responses, if needed.
