17th Annual Fishing Derby set for May 7

Plans are underway by the South Tipton County Chamber of Commerce for the Seventeenth Annual Children’s Fishing Derby on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at Glenn Springs Lake in Drummonds from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m.

The event is for children ages 4-12 and is free of charge. 

All children must be accompanied by an adult.  

Bait will be provided and fishing is permitted from the bank or dock only. 

Prizes will be awarded for the first fish caught, the largest fish, and the most fish caught in each category.

Generous donations from the business community and individuals have made the Fishing Derby successful year after year with over 150 children participating each time. 

The Tipton County Fraternal Order of Police will weigh and measure the fish, as well as, tabulate results. 

Once again, we are asking for donations from the Chamber community.

Dubbed as a lucky charm for him during their C-USA and NCAA tournament runs, the University of Memphis head basketball coach, Josh Pastner has donated his Fireworks of Hope tie to help raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

He autographed the tie, “This tie was our good luck charm. Go Tigers!”

Former NFL star to speak at local fundraiser

A former New York Giants Pro Bowl defensive back is heading to the Bluff City.  Jason Sehorn will be the guest speaker at the Spring Fundraising Banquet for the Memphis Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes slated for Tuesday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hilton Memphis.

While many will remember Sehorn as a standout football player, others will remember him for his marriage proposal to actress Angie Harmon during a taping of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

We're pretty passionate people here at Action News 5.  We're dedicated to creating quality journalism for our amazing audience. We do it every morning, noon and night, 365 days a year!

University of Memphis Kicks For A Cause

"Kicks For A Cause", the University of Memphis Men's Soccer Team's annual charity match, is scheduled for Thursday, March 24th.  Head Coach Richie Grant leads the Tigers into this exhibition match ahead of what he hopes will be a strong 2011 campaign in Conference USA.

The 7 pm kickoff at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex Stadium will feature a match against Colaiste Ide of Ireland with proceeds from the match benefitting Le Bonheur Children's Hospital.

A rain soaked and muddy field didn't stop several Memphis area high schools from playing in a soccer scrimmage series at Bellevue Baptist Church.

The event, sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes of Memphis, featured Arlington High, Sheffield and other local schools looking to get some preseason experience before the regular season kicks off this month. 

However, Matches scheduled for Saturday, March 5 hwere canceled due to heavy rains.

Late legendary coach Overbey to be inducted into Hall of Fame

Coach,  Professor.  Friend. John Emmett Overbey, known as “Jack’ to family, friends and students, was all these things and more.  In recognition of his exemplary commitment, his caring and his achievements, he will be posthumously inducted into the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA) Hall of Fame during the TCCAA/ National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region VII tournament being held at the DSCC E. H. Lannom, Jr. Gymnasium. 

The presentation will take place on Saturday, March 5, at the halftime of the 6 p.m.
