Don't forget to offer your postal worker some water

If you don't know your mail carrier it's never a bad idea to show a quick smile and express a hello.

It would also be nice to offer them some water during the Mid-South's hot summers, especially this one.

It's funny but, technically it's not yet summer. Doesn't seem right does it?

Flood plan worked for Mid-South

Flood plan worked for Mid-South

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said its plans to protect people from the Great Flood of 2011 worked.

The corps also said their flood predictions were just below what they had anticipated.

At a news conference Thursday, the corps revealed several teams of engineers are evaluating the levee system which was tested like never before.

The corps is also forming an inter-agency task force, to see how different federal agencies can aid in recovery and repair.

Car interiors can rise to dangerous temperatures

Even though, technically, summer has not arrived yet it has certainly felt like it.

One thing everyone should consider this time of year if you have children: never, ever forget to leave them in the car, even for a brief minute.

The inside of vehicles can heat up in a hurry, and the temperature can soar to well over 130 degrees inside. It doesn't take long for something serious to occur in the heat for a child.

Searing heat withering Mid-South

The entire Mid-South has been gripped by record breaking heat over the last several days and it appears the heat will hold tight.  There is one part of the forecast that should get better however.  I believe drier air is going to work into the area tomorrow.  This should keep the heat index below the danger level of 105 degrees.  It will still be hot however, as the mercury soars toward the century mark.

Please continue to drink lots of water in the coming days as temperatures are going to remain well above normal for this time of year.

Sheriff prepares for emergency, creates storm shelter registry

In the wake of the recent devastation in areas such as Tuscaloosa, AL and Joplin, MO and the subsequent rescue efforts, Sheriff J.T. “Pancho” Chumley has sought to prepare more comprehensively should a similar situation occur within Tipton County.

Chumley has created a Storm Shelter Registry. The Storm Shelter Registry is a free service for Tipton County residents to provide information about their storm shelters to help first responders in case of an emergency.

As meteorologists keep their eyes glued to radar screens, watching as severe weather heads to the Mid-South, smartphones are giving normal people much of the same capabilities as trained weathermen.
